Job Description

Assistant Team Leader - Growing

Chichester area

Based just outside of Chichester. As a leading producer of quality crops our client is currently recruiting for an Assistant Team Leader on the production side of their growing department. Your role will be to manage teams to produce and maintain healthy plants and to harvest quality crops. You will also maintain a high standard of personal and site hygiene.

Responsibilities will include:

  • To ensure that all practices and procedures carried out on the nursery comply with all legislation,
  • To follow all hygiene procedures.
  • To assist the Team Leaders to plan and implement work and systems so that the crop are grown to agreed standards and quantities within accepted timescales
  • To have a good understanding of plant physiology and nutritional requirements
  • To carry out the duties that maximise quality and quantity of the crops,
  • To carry out all operational tasks safely, accurately and consistently,
  • To ensure the sowings of seeds and spacing of crops are completed accurately to the standards required.
  • To monitor and report immediately any signs of pest, disease and disorders on the crop,
  • To ensure irrigation is applied to the crops to the required standards.
  • To ensure that feed is mixed accurately and safely to the recipe provided
  • To ensure that machinery is operated safely and accurately and ensure any reported equipment and structural faults are remedied quickly.
  • To ensure that biological control agents are distributed in a uniform, accurate and timely method,
  • Ensure all records are completed on time, are accurate and clearly legible,
  • Provide plans and instructions for the movement of plants around the system, from sowing through to packing.
  • Assist with the coaching and training of staff ensuring the correct techniques and procedures are followed.
  • To promote the uptake and implementation of lean manufacturing techniques
  • To ensure that all IFS records and data is implemented correctly and in a timely manner
  • Effectively assist in the control of costs within the production unit.
  • Any other tasks that may arise from time to time.

Essential skills required:

  • Good skills of observation

  • Knowledge of plant nutrition & recognising disorders
  • Pest & Disease recognising
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing Techniques
  • Knowledge of IFS system

  • Knowledge of irrigation of plants

  • Working shift pattern will be Sunday to Thursday.
  • Normal hours are 07.00hrs to 15.00 hrs or finish if later and it would be expected the ATL is on site in time ready to brief the team at the start of the day.


  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays


  • £25,000+ DOE pa
